LEISURE: Who would be in your 80s Top Ten?

RADIO Two listeners may have enjoyed the feast of 80s music played over the last day as part of the 24-Hour Red Nose Danceathon with Sara Cox – but what records from that decade would you put in your own personal Top Ten?

People of a certain age would have grown up with the likes of Duran Duran, Culture Club, Madonna, Frankie Goes to Hollywood, Pet Shop Boys, Wham, A-Ha and Spandau Ballet.

But what songs from the 80s would you select for your Top Ten Play List?

Here is what Steve Sowden, of the Ilminster Press, who is of a certain age to remember the 80s, selected as his Top Ten from the 80s.

10: Never Gonna Give You Up – Rick Astley. 1987. “Really enjoyed Rick Astley’s music when he first appeared on the pop scene. I’m glad to see he is making a music revival now,” says Steve.

09: Ghostbusters – Ray Parker Jr. 1984. “Ghostbusters was one of my favourite films of the 80s, so the theme song had to be in my Top Ten,” says Steve.

08: Do The Hucklebuck – Coast to Coast. 1981. “Many people may not remember this song – but it was the first single I ever bought. As to why – I have no idea!” says Steve.

07: Come On Eileen – Dexy’s Midnight Runners with The Emerald Express. 1982. “Great party/disco song – even to this day,” says Steve.

06: I Should Be So Lucky – Kylie Mingoue. 1988. “The launch of a global pop superstar! Need I say any more?” says Steve.

05: Down to Earth – Curiosity Killed the Cat. 1987. “Really liked this band led by the singer with the extravagant name of Ben Volpeliere-Pierrot,” says Steve.

04: Happy Hour – The Housemartins. 1986. “Great band, great music and loved this song,” says Steve.

03: This Time – England World Cup Squad ’82. 1982. “Best football record of all-time!” says Steve.

02: Stand and Deliver – Adam & The Ants. 1981. “The first pop band I really liked for some strange reason! Although I refrained from dressing in the “new wave” image or as a “dandy highwayman,” says Steve.

01: Vienna – Ultravox. 1981. “Bless - school disco memories and that last song of the night! But from a point of musical history this classic song was kept off the number slot initially by John Lennon’s Woman for a week and then – unbelievably – by Joe Dolce’s novelty hit Shaddap You Face for a further three weeks!” says Steve.
