CLUBS AND SOCIETIES: Braving the Dartmoor snow for Rotary Youth Leadership Award

MEMBERS of the Rotary Club of Ilminster braved the snow on the hills of Dartmoor in order to attend the final day of this year’s Rotary Youth Leadership Award programme.
Rotarian Owen Paterson, who organised the participation of this year’s entrants from Ilminster, said: “This is one of the most rewarding things that we do as a club and is a real opportunity for us to make a difference to the lives of young people.
“This year we were able to raise sufficient funds, through the good efforts of our president, Linda Piggott, who cooked a number of meals to raise the £1,200 we needed to send two young people on this challenging week of activities.
“We were very impressed to see in their final presentations the amazing achievements and personal development of Lisa Shearman and Oscar Fox - especially as the weather had been so bad for their final challenge, which they achieved with flying colours.”
Owen added: “Both of them have said that although it was tough at times it was really enjoyable, and the lessons they have learned will stand them in good stead for the rest of their lives.
“We are certainly looking forward to having them come along and talk to the club about their experiences; and we are already on the hunt for next year’s entrants.”
