SCHOOL NEWS: Sophie Gibbins wins two top awards at Swanmead’s special night

TALENTED student Sophie Gibbins received two of the main awards during Swanmead School’s Celebration of Achievement Evening in Ilminster.

Sophie was presented with the Alison Rose Trophy for Art and the John Wilson Memorial Shield during the awards ceremony on Wednesday (July 19, 2017) which is arguably the highlight of the Swanmead calendar.

Headteacher Mark Walker said Sophie had “flair and a natural eye” for art and spent many hours perfecting her artwork.

Art teacher Alison Rose, who has been a long-standing member of staff at Swanmead, presented Sophie with the award.

Mr Walker then paid tribute to Sophie in announcing the winner of the Memorial Shield by describing the student as a person who went through school with “initiative, maturity and thought.”

He said he was “lost for words” to fully describe how Sophie had held herself at school with “class, elegance and modesty.”

Mr Walker said Sophie was a “humble young person” but with great inner strength.

The John Wilson Memorial Shield was presented to Sophie by Veronica Horman, president of the Ilminster Rotary Club.

The Alison Rose Trophy for Art is awarded to the student who has consistently displayed sustained effort and high attainment within school performing arts.

While the John Wilson Memorial Shield is awarded to an outstanding student who has always given of their best; co-operates fully with peers and staff; behaves in an exemplary manner; has shown initiative and maturity of thought/attitude; has achieved academically in relation to potential; and has represented the school in sport, music and drama.
