LEISURE: Still time to enter Ilminster’s Scarecrow Competition

THE deadline for the annual Scarecrow Competition in Ilminster as part of the town’s Midsummer Experience has been extended.

Organisers at Ilminster Town Council are hoping to reach record numbers with scarecrows this year so have decided to extend the closing date for entries until Tuesday, May 23, 2017.

They are encouraging residents and businesses of Ilminster to take part in this wonderful spectacle which is part of the Ilminster Midsummer Experience.

The Ilminster Scarecrow Competition will take place from June 8-11, 2017.  The town council has entered into the spirit by making scarecrow Andy to advertise the competition and have put him in the window of the Council Chamber.LEISURE: Still time to enter Ilminster’s Scarecrow Competition

The competition is to design, make and display a scarecrow and is open to all age groups, individuals and organisations. Winners will receive high street gift vouchers.

The competition will coincide with the Ilminster Midsummer Experience Weekend and gives visitors the opportunity to walk around the town and view the entries.

Scarecrows do not need to be traditional, they can be themed.

The town council has previously had some marvellous creations including a scarecrow toasting marshmallows, an organic scarecrow named Flora, a carbon copy of Dr Who and his faithful hound K9.

Participants are free to be as inventive as they wish but are encouraged to use recycled and organic materials.

Scarecrows can be made out of virtually anything and be based on any theme!

Entry forms can be obtained from the Ilminster Town Council offices in North Street, Ilminster, from 10am to midday weekdays, download from the council’s website at www.Ilminster.gov.uk or collected from the Meeting House, Ilminster.
Completed entry forms must reach the town council offices by noon on Tuesday, May 23, 2017.

In previous years Brownies, Swanmead School and other organisations as well as individuals have entered the competition.

Scarecrows can be any height up to a maximum of 1.8 metres, but your scarecrow must be made from scratch.

Scarecrows will be judged on strength, durability to the weather, imagination and character and entries can be a single scarecrow, a family or a group.

Scarecrow should also include an element of plant material which can be dried, fresh or living.
