CLUBS AND SOCIETIES: Ilminster Lions Club plants tree at new Archie Gooch Pavilion

MEMBERS of the Lions Club of Ilminster and District enjoyed a tree planting ceremony at Ilminster Town Football Club’s Archie Gooch Pavilion.

The ceremony took place on Saturday, April 1, 2017, but children from Ilminster’s Under-6 football team were not hoodwinked into believing an April Fool’s Day wind-up that spaghetti would bloom on the Italian Alder tree come next spring.

The Lions were also joined by directors of the Ilminster Sports Club Ltd and Cllr Carol Goodall, of South Somerset District Council.

Lions club member Alan Gibbs set the Italian Alder into position outside the pavilion, off Canal Way, which was chosen for its suitability to the location.

It should be noted that the tree planting ceremony took place before the official list of candidates for next month’s Somerset County Council election was announced on Wednesday (April 5, 2017). Mrs Goodall is standing in the Ilminster Division election for the Liberal Democrats where her rival candidates will be Don Kinder (UK Independence Party), Peter Lansdown (Green Party), Ian Mackillop (Labour) and Linda Vijeh (Conservative).

The election takes place on Thursday, May 4, 2017.
