SCHOOL NEWS: Shakespeare would be impressed by insult – you slice of bread

YEAR Four children at Greenfylde First School in Ilminster enjoyed an active drama session led by one of the actors from the Royal Shakespeare Company.

The visit was part of the prize the school won as the Government’s National Pupil Premium Champion.

The children were introduced to the comedy, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, by their visitor, Emma Manton, from the RSC.

Children read lines from the play and learned about iambic pentameter even having a go at making up their own rhythms. The children also tried to convince Hermia to marry Demetrius rather than Lysander.

The session ended with the children throwing ridiculous insults at their teachers - the winning insult in one class being "you slice of bread."

NOTE: Iambic pentameter – a line of verse with five metrical feet, each consisting of one short (or unstressed) syllable followed by one long (or stressed) syllable. An example from William Shakespeare’ A Midsummer Night’s Dream is as follows:

And I do love thee: therefore, go with me;
I'll give thee fairies to attend on thee,
And they shall fetch thee jewels from the deep,
And sing while thou on pressed flowers dost sleep.
