SCHOOL NEWS: Bringing history to life

PUPILS at Greenfylde First School in Ilminster swapped their teachers recently on a trip to Barrington Court and instead had the honour of being taught by King Henry VIII.SCHOOL NEWS: Bringing history to life Photo 2

Children in Key Stage 2 at Greenfylde are currently studying the history of Barrington Court over time and are focusing specifically on the Tudor and Second World War periods.

For their visit with King Henry VIII the children and staff all dressed in Tudor costume and enjoyed an entertaining and informative session about the history of the Tudors with Good King Hal – also known as King Henry VIII.

This was followed by a tour around the house imagining what life may have been like as a rich person in the Tudor era including some dancing in the great hall and parading fashions in the long gallery.

The day finished with a jousting tournament hosted by King Henry VIII and this, for many proved the highlight of the day.

Claire Oaten, Greenfylde’s headteacher, said: “Bringing History to life in this way makes the learning fun for the children and we couldn’t have achieved this without the enthusiasm and character of Good King Hal.

“The children all had a fabulous day and will now also use this visit as the basis for their English topic of historical novels.”
