SCHOOL NEWS: High-speed link road over Herne Hill?

DON’T PANIC! The headline might sound rather alarming, but it was just the title for a fictitious debate carried out by pupils from Greenfylde First School in Ilminster.
As part of Greenfylde’s lessons for Forest School, some Year Four pupils spent the day in two teams preparing for a debate over whether there should be a new high-speed link road built over Herne Hill.
At the end of the day, the children went to the Ilminster Town Council offices to present their cases to an independent panel made up of Greenfylde’s Forest School teacher, Vernon Higgins; school governor Lesley Lusby and town clerk Joy Norris.
The children really impressed the panel with their confident presentations and questions from both sides and despite some strong views a friendly rivalry was maintained throughout.
Greenfylde headteacher Claire Oaten said: “It is always wonderful to see our children take part in activities like these where they have the opportunity to develop key skills that they will be able to use throughout their lives.
“Our children love ForestSchool and the debates, which have been about a range of issues, are a new part of our curriculum for this term.
“The day proved to be very enjoyable and the children especially liked taking their debate into the council chamber, who knows we may have even seen a future town councillor of Ilminster in the making.”
