SCHOOL NEWS: Firefighters test Greenfylde’s den building skills

SUPPORTING Save the Children’s Den Building Day became a very inventive albeit wet activity for pupils at Greenfylde First School in Ilminster.
Each class was challenged to build a Den using any equipment it could find from the classrooms and from the onsite Forest School with the stipulation that the design must fit all of the pupils and staff from their class.
They then had to ‘shelter’ and their structure was tested with the help of the Ilminster Fire Station staff of Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service.
Claire Oaten, headteacher, said: “The idea behind this fundraising activity is to help the children understand that there are children in the world today who have to live in makeshift shelters and how vulnerable they can feel, especially in areas that have variable weather conditions including monsoons.
“Although this activity was fun and an amazing site with the whole school out on the field building shelters it did have a very serious message and I know our pupils have been reflecting on how they would feel if these were their real home.”
The event was run as part of the school’s Forest School programme which involves all of the pupils and following the event £92 was raised for Save the Children.
Greenfylde would like to thank Vernon Higgins for arranging this event and the fire crew from Ilminster who supported the children and made the event extra special.
