SCHOOL NEWS: Mayor’s donation will help with outdoors learning

THE Sunny Ile Pre-School was delighted to receive a £100 cheque from the Mayor of Ilminster, Cllr Val Keitch, during the town’s Annual Community Assembly on Tuesday (May 9, 2017).
The pre-school was one of 12 groups and organisations to receive a donation from the Mayor who had raised around £1,000 for local good causes during the past year.
Cheryl Herrick, the pre-school leader, was on hand to receive the cheque from the Mayor during the presentation service held at Greenfylde First School which is where the pre-school is also based.
“We are grateful to the Mayor for her kind donation towards our fundraising for our new outdoor resources,” said Cheryl. “We are providing new resources that will help the children learn lifelong skills such as teamwork, problem solving, resilience and negotiation.
“Our current cohort tracking of our children shows that there are certain areas of the curriculum, which need focus to help the children develop and learn. We offer a free flow system and our children spend a lot of time outdoors.”
Cheryl added: “A growing interest in media equipment such as television, videos and computer games has also contributed to the children’s lives, giving them fewer opportunities to access outdoor spaces or benefit from being outside.
“Outdoor learning complements indoor learning and is equally important. Play and learning that flow seamlessly between indoors and outdoors enable children to make the most of the resources and materials available to them and develop their ideas without unnecessary interruption.”
