SCHOOL NEWS: Swanmead win indoor cricket tournament

YOUNG cricketers from Swanmead School in Ilminster got one over their counterparts in Chard – no different to what the senior men’s cricket team in Ilminster like nothing better to do – by winning the first-ever Primary Indoor Cricket event held at Holyrood Academy in Chard.

The competition was played on Tuesday, February 21, 2017, and Swanmead School from Ilminster were joined by Redstart, Avishayes and Manor Court from Chard.

They competed against one another in a mini round-robin tournament in an attempt to gain a place in the final.

Each team faced eight overs with every pair batting for two. The spectators were treated to some superb boundary hitting and consistent bowling throughout the afternoon.

Avishayes faced Manor Court in the hunt for third and fourth place and Swanmead and Redstart competed in the final!

It was a tense finish, but the last over saw Swanmead finish on top after some strong fielding displays and excellent hitting.

Once the competition had finished there was time for one large interactive game using the whole sports hall.

Swanmead and Manor Court were mixed together to play against Redstart and Avishayes.

Shannon Sims, PE teacher at Holyrood, said: “This gave the children the opportunity to work together and make new friends from other schools.

“A lovely, fun-filled day ended with a small presentation where Charlotte Lamb of Swanmead was presented with a medal for outstanding effort and performance.”

Results: 1st-Swanmead, 2nd-Redstart, 3rd-Avishayes, 4th-Manor Court.
