SCHOOL NEWS: Flying the flag for the Olympics

PUPILS at Greenfylde First School in Ilminster are all ready-steady-go for the Olympics in Rio having held their own Olympic Day at the end of term.

Organised by their school games co-ordinator, Bob Brunt, the day at the Rec saw classes representing countries ranging from Great Britain to China, Estonia and Australia and taking part in a range of Olympic and Paralympic themed events.SCHOOL NEWS: Flying the flag for the Olympics Photo 3

The day was opened in style by Ilminster’s Mayor, Cllr Val Keitch, who was ably assisted by Richard Baker as Master of Ceremonies and the children took part in their own opening ceremony proudly waving flags representing their chosen countries.

The children enjoyed a range of events including football, discus, javelin, boccia and guided running and there was even an equestrian event thanks to some very tame hobby horses!

During the day the children were helped by young sports leaders from Swanmead School and brought the day to an end with a celebration closing ceremony.

Claire Oaten, headteacher at Greenfylde, said: “The Olympics are a major worldwide cultural and sporting event and it was wonderful to have our own small piece of this here in Greenfylde.

“The children love to work as teams and took great pride in representing their countries and whilst competitive, also show the strength and character needed to support and celebrate the achievements of others.

“Having both Olympic and Paralympic themed events made the day inclusive for all and hopefully showed our pupils that in sport there are no boundaries to what you can achieve.”

The opening ceremony of the 2016 Olympic Games in Brazil is being held tonight (Friday, August 5, 2016).
