SCHOOL NEWS: Pupils learn about diversity and equality

CHILDREN at Greenfylde First School in Ilminster were given a talk about equality and diversity.
Gloria Lawrence was invited into the school as a guest speaker and she told her own story of how she was the only black girl in her first class at school and nobody would play with her.
She talked to the classes about different types of racism and during the session the children learnt about racism and slavery, through songs, actions and videos.
The children listened to first hand experiences of what it is like to leave your home country and move to another place exploring both the positives and negatives people face today and in the past.
Greenfylde headteacher Claire Oaten said: “Our children live in a very diverse world and whilst they may not experience the full extent of this locally, speakers like Gloria and earlier in the term Pete the Poet and Razwan Ul-Haq ensure our pupils are gaining a broader knowledge of worldwide communities and the importance of showing tolerance and equality to others.”
