SCHOOL NEWS: MP impressed by ideas at Somerset Children’s Parliament

YEOVIL MP Marcus Fysh was delighted to be asked to officially open the Somerset Children’s Parliament in the Council Chamber at Taunton.

Mr Fysh was asked to provide an opening address to the schools present, before listening to all of the schools presenting in the afternoon session on Friday (March 18, 2016).

The range of topics covered was impressive and included resolving food poverty, helping endangered species, protecting ancient woodlands, cyber bullying, developing playgrounds and supporting ‘send a friend to school’.

All of the schools were knowledgeable and presented with confidence and skill.

Mr Fysh said: “I am sure I have seen some of the future MPs today, the confidence of delivery from all of these young students was truly impressive – they should all be very proud of themselves.

“The afternoon session was a real credit to the schools involved, and I was pleased to be able to see one of the schools in my own Yeovil Constituency, West Chinnock Primary School, pick up the runners-up prize.

“I am also pleased to send huge congratulations to Combe St Nicholas Primary School, who won the morning’s session discussing the sugar tax, and I will aim to meet with them when they visit the Houses of Parliament in April.”
