SCHOOL NEWS: Great Fire of London comes to life at Neroche

HISTORY came to life at Neroche Primary School at Broadway when children had a surprise visit from a travelling historian to explain more about the Great Fire of London.
The historian shared artefacts and created a timeline of the main events of the fire of 1666. The children had to work really hard to get their 17th Century water pumps working in order to put out a “fire” in the playground,
Jasmine, aged six, said: “It was so hard to push the pump hard enough to get enough water out. Putting out a real fire must be so hard!”
In addition to their practical 17th Century fire fighting skills, the children also experienced trying to write a Samuel Pepys diary entry.
Year Two’s own Sam said: “The quill is really scratchy, you can spill ink really easily!”
Headteacher Connel Boyle added: “Watching the children get immersed in history is a wonder to observe.
“Watching the children show me metre long nails and grappling irons, describing how the Londoners had to pull walls and buildings down was fascinating.
“Letting children get hands on experiences such a powerful tool to create enthusiasm and enjoyment in learning.”
