SOMERSET NEWS: Statue of Liberty smiles on Great British Bake Off’s Val

HER gingerbread Statue of Liberty may have toppled over, but Somerset’s Val Stones is still standing tall after once again surviving another round of TV’s The Great British Bake Off.
Val had a difficult opening round in last week’s show and once again the judges, Mary Berry and Paul Hollywood, were tonight (Wednesday, August 31, 2016) debating whether to show her the kitchen exit door.
But no – Val has lived to bake another day! Amazingly!
And even Val, who lives at Somerton and is a former headteacher of Chilthorne Domer Primary School near Yeovil, was surprised when it was announced at the end of tonight’s programme that Welsh hairdresser Louise Williams, who had a disaster in the final showstopper round, was going home.

Tonight’s show saw the bakers challenged to make 24 identical iced biscuits which Val failed to achieve.
But she redeemed herself with some Viennese whirls before again having issues in the showstopper round of building a biscuit structure out of gingerbread.
Her New York inspired gingerbread creation included the Empire State Building and the Statue of Liberty – but things started to topple right at the wrong moment.
But Val survived and will now go into next Wednesday’s (September 7, 2016) show looking to really impress the judges although she may still be shocked at having survived tonight’s biscuit round.
