GLOVERS NEWS: Yeovil Town gain win in EFL Trophy

YEOVIL Town gained a 4-3 success at Huish Park on Tuesday (August 30, 2016) night against visiting Portsmouth in the EFL Trophy.
It was the Glovers first group game in the newly-formed EFL Trophy competition and it proved a high-scoring seven-goal affair with six of them coming into the opening 45 minutes.
Michael Smith grabbed the opener for Portsmouth on ten minutes when he netted past Yeovil keeper Jonny Maddison, playing his first game of the game season with Artur Krysiak rested to the bench.
Bevis Mugabi soon equalised afterwards for the Glovers and then Tom Eaves put Yeovil 2-1 up on 22 minutes.
Yeovil extended their lead five minutes later through Izale McLeod, only for Michael Smith to reduce the deficit for Pompey on 37 minutes with his second of the night.
But Tom Eaves was on target once again to give Yeovil a 4-2 lead going into the half-time interval.
Michael Smith completed the scoring on 54 minutes when he netted his hat-trick and considering what had gone on previously it was somewhat strange that the score remained at 4-3 to Yeovil for the remaining 36 minutes.
Yeovil’s next group game will be against Bristol Rovers and then they will face a Reading B Under-21 team at the Madejski Stadium.
The EFL Trophy replaces the Johnstones Paint Trophy.
Although not the most important competition of the season the win will come as a welcome tonic to the Glovers following a string of disappointing defeats.
