SOMERSET NEWS: Miracle nobody was killed after driver goes down M5 the wrong way

MOTORISTS have said tonight (Tuesday, August 30, 2016) that it was a miracle nobody was killed after an elderly driver was in collision with several vehicles after driving the wrong way down the M5 between Bridgwater and Taunton.
At just after 6.15pm the police received multiple 999 calls about a vehicle travelling wrong way northbound in lane three of the M5 southbound carriageway.
A police spokesman said: “The vehicle was in collision with several other vehicles, but thankfully the driver – a man in his 70s – suffered only minor injuries. Nobody else was seriously hurt either.
“The man’s been taken to hospital as a precaution and we’re now working with Highways England to clear the scene of debris.”
The northbound carriageway was unaffected.
“We’d like to thank all those who called in to report the incident – due to the volume of calls we weren’t able to answer the calls as quickly as normal,” added the police spokesman. “We appreciate the public’s patience while we work to get the southbound carriageway running again.”
Three fire engines from Bridgwater were mobilised and found that the incident involved eight vehicles on the M5 between Junction 24 Huntworth and Junction 25 Blackbrook.
Many people have been commenting on social media about tonight’s incident with some saying it was a miracle that nobody was killed.
UPDATE: The M5 is running freely again now.
