SOMERSET NEWS: Fire safety workshops for residential care premises

FIRE safety workshops are to be held across Somerset next month for staff working in residential care premises.
The workshops are to be held in Street, Yeovil, Chard, Shepton Mallet, Minehead, Burnham-on-Sea and Taunton.
Topics covered in the workshops will be a brief recap on the fire risk assessment process, the Fire Service’s approach to inspecting residential care homes, actions to take on the activation of your fire alarm system, protecting your means of escape; evacuation strategies, and fire safety management.
Also to be discussed will be a devastating fire at the Rosepark residential care home in South Lanarkshire back in 2004 where 14 residents lost their lives.
Similar workshops were held last year in Somerset and such was their success that the Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service is to run them again.
“If you missed last year’s presentations, then it’s strongly recommended everyone responsible for fire safety comes along,” said a Fire Service spokesman.
“The events are designed to offer help, advice and to assist in the safety of residents and staff as well as providing the ‘Responsible Persons’ a greater understanding of their legal duty to comply with fire safety legislation.”
Events and dates are as follows: Somerset East (South Somerset and Mendip District Council Areas) – the events will take place at the following fire stations during September and all sessions will start at 10am. An afternoon session will only take place if demand dictates. Thursday, September 8, 2016 – Street Fire Station. Friday, September 9, 2016 – Yeovil Fire Station. Monday, September 12, 2016 – Chard Fire Station. Tuesday, September 13, 2016 – Shepton Mallet Fire Station.
