FOOTBALL: Chard Rangers lift Tom Facey Cup

CHARD Rangers won the Tom Facey Cup Final with a 5-1 victory over Crewkerne Town in a game played at Combe St Nicholas FC.
Rangers, of the Perry Street League, won the pre-season tournament final with goals from Simon Loader (two), Matt Gaylard (two) and Scott Marshall. Gaylard missed the chance of a hat-trick when a penalty kick was saved by the Crewkerne keeper during the match played earlier this month on Friday, August 5, 2016.
Chard captain Ryan Peasland said: “This may be a tournament that is a pre-curser to the season ahead, but for Chard Rangers this year we were determined to win this trophy.
“Tom was a very special young man, and a great friend to many in our squad. He lost his battle with leukaemia when we were at school together and as a team we were determined to lift this trophy for Tom and dedicate to his memory and in support of his family.”
Tom loved playing football and was a member of Combe FC, but sadly passed away on October 21, 2005, at the age of just 14.
Chard Rangers would like to thank Steve Jones, Graham Barker and all at The Phoenix Hotel for sponsoring the club’s new kit.
The Tom Facey Cup summer tournament is played each pre-season in memory to Tom and also to raise money for charity.
