ILMINSTER NEWS: Open air cinema coming to the Recreation Ground?

COUNCILLORS are to discuss possible plans to hold regular open air cinema nights in Ilminster.

Paul Bodgers, who moved to Ilminster nearly two years ago, met with Ilminster Town Council’s open spaces committee last night (Tuesday, February 16, 2016) to talk to councillors about Starlight Cinema.

The proposals would see a giant 20ft x 11ft inflatable projection screen pop-up at the Rec on Canal Way and allow people to sit out on a warm summer’s evening and watch a movie.

“Summer film screenings make a great event,” said Paul. “In Ilminster we are fortunate to have the Recreation Ground which we believe would be an ideal space for an outdoor cinema.

“Open air cinemas are accessible to almost everyone in the community. We would encourage people to bring their own chairs, blankets and picnics.”ILMINSTER NEWS: Open air cinema coming to the Recreation Ground?

He told councillors that the film nights could help to raise money for local good causes in the area.

Mr Bodgers had been invited to the meeting last night by committee chairman Cllr Stuart Shepherd who had been impressed with the idea when they had discussed about it previously.

But, although councillors showed interest in the project, they did have some reservations and concerns.

Cllr Val Keitch said: “It is a good idea, but I know there are a lot of elderly people living down around the Rec and so there will be concerns about the possible noise. There is also a concern about children watching films which are classified for older people.”

Mr Bodgers said that there were other much noisier events held at the Rec – such as the fair.

But he admitted that this was all at an initial stage and wanted to seek the views of the councillors.

Cllr Roger Swann said: “I think it is a great idea – stick with it. It could have great potential.”

Councillors agreed to support the idea, but would need to have further discussions and more details to take it forward.

One suggestion, which was made during last night’s meeting, was perhaps holding the open air cinema in Britten’s Field next to the Recreation Ground and getting Ilminster Town FC involved with the club’s new headquarters.
