CRICKET: Ilminster 1sts close season in a respectable fourth spot

ILMINSTER Cricket Club’s first team finished the 2017 campaign in disappointing fashion on Saturday (September 2, 2017) with a six-wicket defeat at Keynsham.

Skipper Sam Spurway won the toss for Ilminster and elected to bat and they got off to a good start with the opening duo putting on 61 before George Hayward departed for 22.

It quickly became 67-2 when fellow opener J. Warry was stumped by wicket-keeper Daniel Jarman for 34.

Number three Charlie Vickery provided stubborn resistance to the Keynsham bowling attack and he knocked 51 off 95 balls before he became the eighth wicket to fall with the score having just past the 200-run barrier.

The innings closed soon afterwards on 201-9 with Richard Elswood closing on an undefeated 27 following a flamboyant ten-ball knock which included three fours and two big sixes.

Keynsham reached the winning post in the penultimate over of the match with skipper Daniel Jarman at the end on an undefeated 68. Reg Keates had earlier hit 69.

Charlie Vickery was the pick of the Ilminster bowling attack with 3-22 from his ten overs.

The result meant Ilminster finished the 2017 season in Premier Two Bristol/Somerset Division of the West of England Premier Cricket Club in a respectable fourth position with eight wins and seven defeats in their 18-game campaign. Three games were abandoned.
