ILMINSTER NEWS: Howzat! Keeping alive our history for future generations

WELL-KNOWN Ilminster man Jim Sainsbury was left virtually lost for words – very unusual it has to be said – when he found himself being presented with a Mayor’s Award on Tuesday (May 9, 2017) evening.

The Mayor of Ilminster, Cllr Val Keitch, presented him with the annual award in recognition of his 50 years of service with Ilminster Cricket Club and his ongoing work with the Heritage of the Ile Trust group.

“Jim is a local man who has been involved with the cricket club for 50 years – first as a player and then working hard on a voluntary basis on the committee to contribute to the continued success of the club,” said the Mayor.

“He is also very involved in the Heritage of the Ile group and maintains its photographic library. This helps keep alive our local history for future generations.

“Jim contributes much to the life of Ilminster and without such dedicated volunteers our town would be poorer.”

The Heritage of the Ile Trust is made up of local people from Ilminster who are keen to preserve the photographic history of the town for the benefit of future generations.

Jim admitted he was surprised at receiving the accolade from the Mayor, but was clearly proud as punch.

And he took the opportunity to tell people during the presentation at Greenfylde First School as part of Ilminster Town Council’s Annual Community Assembly that he was always looking for old photos of the town.

“The photos don’t even have to be really old,” he said. “If anyone has any old photos of Ilminster and events in the town from 1970s and 1980s please think about letting us have them to add to the Heritage of the Ile’s photographic collection.”
