ILMINSTER AREA NEWS: Number’s up for bingo caller Brenda

A STALWART bingo caller has shouted out her last number after nearly 20 years of being the “voice” of her village bingo nights.
Brenda Pyle, bingo caller extraordinaire for Ashill’s monthly charity meat bingo, called her last number earlier this month.
“Having started this back in 1998 I felt that after almost 20 years it was high time that I gave someone else a go and I am delighted that Jayne Mann has agreed to take over from next month,” she said.
The monthly event was originally started to raise funds towards the village hall, before changing its focus to charitable donations.
Since then a whopping great £45,000 has been raised and donated to a wide range of charities.
The organising team now consists of John Brunt, Len and Marilyn Woodland, Jo and Phil Underhill and Gwen Hymas.
They meet each year to discuss which charities to support, in addition to making one-off donations in response to international emergencies.
Players, who enjoy the friendly, relaxed atmosphere and the opportunity they have to socialise with friends and newcomers come from around the area including Taunton, Ilton, Buckland St Mary, Chard and Ilminster, as well as Ashill.
Bingo nights are held on the last Wednesday of each month at Ashill village hall - doors open at 6.45pm with eyes down at 7.30pm.
