SOMERSET NEWS: We will remember them

THE nation will fall silent this morning (Friday, November 11, 2016) as people pay their respects to mark Armistice Day.

A two-minute silence will begin at 11am to commemorate the moment when the guns went quiet to signify the end of the First World War.

Short ceremonies will take place in towns across Somerset. Among those ceremonies are:

The siren at Leonardo Helicopters, better known as Westlands, in YEOVIL will sound to signal the start of the two-minute remembrance.

A service will held in the Borough in the heart of Yeovil at the town’s war memorial.

This year, as in previous years, a two-minute silence will be observed outside the Guildhall in CHARD at 11am. Refreshments will be available in the town hall of the Guildhall following the ceremony at 11.15am onwards.

A similar mark of remembrance will be made at the war memorial in ILMINSTER at the Minster church with a short service – conducted by Rev Deborah Perreau – with people gathering from 10.45am in readiness for the 11am tribute.

A service will also take place at the war memorial in King Square in BRIDGWATER as people join with the rest of the county and nation in observing the two-minute silence at 11am.

The moment marks the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month when back in 1918 the guns fell silent to end the Great War.

We will remember them.
