ILMINSTER NEWS: Sophie Storey overwhelmed by messages of thanks after council resignation

A FORMER member of Ilminster Town Council - who resigned her position as a councillor earlier this week - has been overwhelmed by the reaction she has received from local people.

Sophie Storey handed in her resignation as a councillor on Tuesday (May 10, 2016) following three years on the council.

Ilminster Press broke the news yesterday and said that Mrs Storey had grown frustrated with a number of issues going on at the council.

As soon as the news began to spread on social media people from the town have been posting comments thanking Mrs Storey for her efforts and how disappointed they were that she had stood down from the council.

“I’ve seen some lovely comments on Facebook,” said Mrs Storey. “I’ve been overwhelmed by what’s been said and I’m obviously touched. I would like to thank everyone who has wished me well – it really is appreciated.

“I have even been stopped in the street by people who have thanked me for what I’ve done and tried to do while I’ve been on the council.

“Although I have now left the council I still plan on supporting Ilminster projects and helping people as much as I can.”

Mrs Storey told Ilminster Press yesterday that she had resigned due to a number of reasons, but that she felt she had “no pride in being part of the new town council since last May’s local election.”

She played a key role in setting up the tuck-shop kiosk at the play area on the Ilminster Recreation Ground and had taken a positive stance on the building of Ilminster Town Football Club’s new community Archie Gooch Pavilion in Britten’s Field.

More recently she was leading a public consultation on an ambitious project to upgrade the play area at the Ilminster Rec and engaging with local schoolchildren, while she is also supporting fundraising to purchase two potentially life-saving defibrillators for the town.
