ILMINSTER NEWS: More governors needed at Swanmead

THE headteacher of Swanmead Community School in Ilminster has sent out an urgent SOS as he looks for more people to consider becoming a school governor.
Mark Walker has asked for support in the school’s latest newsletter to parents in which he says he hopes they might be able to help Swanmead overcome a “bit of a current issue.”
“Over my five years at Swanmead, I have always been lucky enough to be supported and challenged by an excellent team of governors,” he said.
“They have been made up of groups of parents and local people that hold me to account for the success of the school and help direct the vision for the next stages of our development.”
But Mr Walker said: “As the school has got more successful and people have got increasingly busier, that team of crucial people have stepped down from their role after doing their bit for the school their children attend.
“Aside from two staff members that also sit on the governing body, this has left the school with just five people to hold me and the school to account.
“This is now beginning to get serious and, with the school currently in a good place, it would be a real tragedy if the school’s continued prosperity is cut short due to a lack of parents and community members becoming involved as governors.”
Mr Walker said that a letter to parents he sent out in February asking if anyone would put themselves forward as parent-governors received no uptake.
More information for parents about becoming a governor has been included in the latest school newsletter. But people can also phone the school on 01460-52431 for more details.
“I am really hoping the many highly skilled parents and carers we have in our school community might get in touch and help us make Swanmead the best it can be,” added Mr Walker.
