SOUTH SOMERSET NEWS: Warning to residents – potential scam phone calls

PEOPLE throughout the Ilminster area and South Somerset are being reminded to be on their guard against scam phone calls.
The repeat warning comes from South Somerset District Council after learning of a number of scam calls in the Wincanton area earlier this month.
A gentleman from a phone number which cannot be traced is calling residents claiming to be from either “South Somerset District Council”, “Wincanton Town Council” or “South Somerset County Council” and wanting to speak about a recent accident you may have had.
A spokesman for South Somerset District Council said: “We have had a few incidents of phone calls of this nature reported to us in the last 48 hours.
“If you are unsure of who you are talking to and instinct tells you something is not quite right, hang up, call 01935-462462 and check with a customer advisor whether the name of the person who called you really does exist.
“If you have given over personal details, we would advise you to call the police straight away on 101 and report the matter as an identity theft scam. The police will also direct you to the Action Fraud helpline”.
Action Fraud can be contacted directly on 0300 123 2040 if you wish to call them direct.
