ILMINSTER NEWS: Flat severely damaged by fire in West Street

FIREFIGHTERS were called out to a fire at a property in West Street, Ilminster, this afternoon (Thursday, January 7, 2016).
The alarm was raised shortly after lunchtime to the incident in a house close to the Crown Inn.
The road was blocked as emergency services descended on the scene with motorists coming from the Shrubbery Hotel direction being directed up New Road.
Further details are awaited, but it looked as if the incident involved the upstairs of the two-storey building and at least three fire engines were at the scene.
This story will be updated when more details are known.
UPDATE: The Fire Service has reported that three fire engines from Ilminster and Chard attended the incident after the alarm was raised at just before 3pm.
They found a large amount of smoke coming from the first-floor of the terraced property.
“The property was severely damaged by fire and smoke,” said a spokesman for the Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service.
“The cause of the fire is believed to be accidental. We requested the attendance of Western Power to isolate the electricity supply to the property.”
