SQUASH: Friendly club looks for new members

THERE are only two squash-only clubs in Somerset – one of them is at Wellington near Taunton and the other is in the village of Merriott just down the road near Crewkerne.
Merriott Squash Club is a friendly, member-run club, with a very relaxed atmosphere.
With that ethos it is keen to welcome players of all ages and all levels from beginners to Somerset League players.
The club is based in what was once a Unitarian Chapel in Lower Street and celebrated its 50th anniversary back in November 2014.
It currently has around 65 members, but would love to get up around the 100 mark.
Merriott has two teams in the Somerset League and has in its ranks some up-and-coming talented young players such as brothers Reuben and Josh Morris.
Amazingly, despite its popularity with nearly 50,000 squash courts around the world, the sport has still not been accepted into the Olympic Games.
It narrowly missed out on being instated for the 2012 London Games and has also been turned down for this summer’s Olympics in Brazil in favour of golf and rugby sevens.
Merriott club captain Matt Gentle said it would be fantastic for the sport to see it recognised by the Olympics.
“If that ever happened I’m sure the coverage the sport would gain would see lots more people coming along to have a go at squash,” he said.
“But we’d be more than pleased to see people now who are interested in playing squash. It’s a great club here at Merriott.”
Anyone wanting further details – please call the club on 01460-72064 or 07718-664147 or email treasurer James Gentle at james-gentle@hotmail.co.uk .
