FOOTBALL: Bad day at the office for Ilminster Town

ILMINSTER Town will be looking to bounce back on Saturday (August 26, 2017) when they travel to face Frys Club in the Premier Divison of the Somerset County League following a midweek defeat against Staplegrove.
The Blues suffered their first defeat of the 2017-18 season on Wednesday (August 23, 2017) when Staplegrove visited the Archie Gooch Pavilion and went away with a 3-0 success.
An early goal for Staplegrove after just two minutes knocked the stuffing out of Ilminster who were on the back foot, but midway through the half they rallied and the rest of opening period was even with no further goals and no real changes.
In the second-half ilminster pushed hard and a goal mouth scramble nearly brought an equaliser but Staplegrove broke from that and scored their second despite Caspar Paine making a good save but he pushed the ball back into the supporting forwards path for a tap in.
Ilminster were then given a penalty when Carl Lazenby was brought down and with regular penalty taker Taylor Jefferson off injured after a strong challenge, Andy Whitefield stepped up to take the spot kick.
But man of the match Shaune Locke in the Staplegrove goal made a great save and then brilliantly kept out Ilminster’s Jonny May who was first to the loose ball.
Staplegrove broke away again and made it 3-0 a score line that slightly flattered them.
On another day with luck and better defending in the opening minutes the result could have been different, but it was just one of those bad days at the office for the Glovers.
Ilminster are not going to win every game and it will be a hard season, but the attitude of all players is fantastic at the moment.
