Every two months the Tesco store in Shudrick Lane gives out £7,000 to three local groups or organisations deserving of financial support.

The national Tesco scheme is funded by money raised from the 5p plastic carrier bag charge and thousands of projects across the country have been backed.

The Ilminster store gives out cheques for £4,000, £2,000 and £1,000 six times a year and these latest handouts saw the Ilminster Arts Centre receive the biggest handout.

Christine Walker, a trustee of the arts centre, was on hand to receive the cheque from Tesco representatives, Deputy Mayor of Ilminster, Cllr Julie Fowler, and Richard Younger-Ross, who is an enabler with the Groundwork charity which helps and encourages community groups to apply for grants from the Bags of Help scheme.

The Ilminster Literacy Festival received £2,000, while Broadway and Horton Cricket Club received £1,000.
