ILMINSTER NEWS: Flooding – strong community spirit will see Ilminster work together says Silver Street Dairy owner

BUSINESS owner Caroline Speke is still counting the cost of the “devastation” left behind by flooding in Ilminster.
Caroline has run the Silver Street Dairy in the town centre for the past three years, but it is currently closed as the mopping up exercise continues following on from the recent flooding of Sunday, July 23, 2017.
“I got to the shop at about 2.15pm in what can only be described as biblical rain and the devastation was awful,” she said.
Caroline told people ahead of a packed meeting of Ilminster Town Council’s planning, highways and transport committee that the shop was flooded with water and some contaminated water.
“If the drains had been rodded, jetted and cleaned we wouldn’t have had this,” she said.
But she said that Ilminster had a strong sense of community and everybody was “supporting each other.”
There is still no news when Silver Street Dairy will reopen following the flooding while the business next door, Retail Therapy, also suffered and remains closed.
Caroline, speaking later on social media, said it had been a “fantastic turnout at the council meeting.”
“Well done everyone to those who spoke,” she said. “Let’s keep things moving.”
Planning committee chairman, Cllr Andrew Sherman, said: “We can see tensions are very high.”
The issue of flooding will be placed on the agenda for Ilminster Town Council’s full monthly meeting which is scheduled for Tuesday, August 15, 2017.
