ILMINSTER NEWS: Former police station will be known as Peel Court

WORK is progressing well on converting the old Ilminster Police Station into seven flats in a development which will be called Peel Court.

The plans were given permission by South Somerset District Council back in March 2017 following support from Ilminster Town Council.ILMINSTER NEWS: Former police station will be known as Peel Court Photo 2

Ilminster Estates Ltd was given the go-ahead to make alterations and convert the former police station at the Butts, along with a first floor extension to an existing storage building, to create the flats.

The development will comprise five two-bed and two one-bedroom flats along with parking facilities. The plans also include the construction of cycle and bin stores.

The work is being carried out by local firm Grinters and it has posted some photos of the development – so far – on its social networking Facebook page.

A spokesman for Grinters said: “As some of you will have seen we have moved into the old police station which is now known as Peel Court. We are in the process of converting the building into seven flats.”

We are guessing that the name of Peel Court comes in reference to Sir Robert Peel who is regarded as the father of modern British policing.

As Home Secretary in the late 1820s he introduced a number of important reforms of British criminal law – most memorably establishing the Metropolitan Police for London.

It led to the first English police force being set-up and the creation of “bobbies on the beat” and served as the model for policing throughout the country.

Sir Robert Peel twice served as Prime Minister from 1834-35 and from 1841-46.
