ILMINSTER NEWS: Town remembers the war dead

THE Mayor of Ilminster said she was delighted to see so many children take part in the Remembrance Sunday commemorations.
Cllr Val Keitch, speaking following the service and wreath-laying ceremony at the Minster in Ilminster on Sunday (November 13, 2016), said it was so important that the young people of today learn about the importance and significance of the commemoration.
A poignant civic service of remembrance was held earlier at the Minster Church of St Mary and the building was packed with people wanting to show their respects to those who had made the ultimate sacrifice in their bid to keep this country safe from tyranny.
The annual Remembrance Sunday event was jointly hosted by Ilminster Town Council and the Ilminster branch of the Royal British Legion.
The vicar of Ilminster, Rev Nigel Done, welcomed everyone to the Minster for the service and the church was packed once again with civic dignitaries, representatives of the Armed Forces, service charities, emergency services and youth organisations and others who wanted to show their respects.
Lessons were read during the service by the Mayor of Ilminster and a representative of the Royal British Legion.
The address was given by Rev Done the chaplain to the Ilminster branch of the Royal British Legion, and prayers were led by Rev Anna Flindall, Methodist Minister.
A wreath-laying ceremony was then held outside the Minster at the war memorial where a large number of wreaths were placed on behalf of various organisations.
Among the civic dignitaries at the service were Yeovil MP Marcus Fysh and Brigadier Alastair Fyfe, a deputy lieutenant of Somerset.
Once again children and young people played a leading role in proceedings and among the wreaths were those from Wadham School, Swanmead School and Greenfylde First School.
A parade – led by the Stoke-sub-Hamdon Band – then went through the town before refreshments were held at Greenfylde.

Similar services were held throughout South Somerset as the whole country was united in remembrance.
