ILMINSTER NEWS: Sponsored walk success for Jake’s wheelchair appeal

PEOPLE put their best foot forward last weekend to help raise money for the ongoing appeal to buy local lad Jake Cullen a special off-road wheelchair.

Supporters gathered at the Shrubbery Hotel on Sunday (August 21, 2016) in Ilminster before setting off on the 6k walk to Sea Bends along cycle path and then back to the new Archie Gooch Pavilion at Britten’s Field for refreshments.

Jake, 15, lives with the rare Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy and the off-road wheelchair – which will cost in the region of £14,000 – will make a huge difference to him. It will give him more independence and allow him to take his pet dog for a walk.ILMINSTER NEWS: Sponsored walk success for Jake’s wheelchair appeal

The Mayor of Ilminster, Cllr Val Keitch, was on hand to give the walkers her support and wave them on their way.

Sophie Storey, who helped to organise the sponsored walk, said the event raised around £200 and would like to thank everyone who took part.

Although Jake lives with mum and dad, Tash and Mark, at South Petherton, they are a well-known family in Ilminster.

Jake’s brother, Bradley, died three years ago aged 15 as a result of heart failure brought on by the Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy he too lived with.

Further funds for Jake’s off-road wheelchair fund were raised at the Shrubbery Hotel on Friday, August 19, 2016, during an Elvis tribute night with well-known local singer Barry Paull.

Everyone involved in the appeal would like to thank Barry for his support.
