ILMINSTER NEWS: Shout all about it! Helena completed her sponsored silence challenge!

SELF-CONFESSED chatterbox Helena Jones said it was the “hardest thing I’ve ever done” after going eight hours without talking to help raise funds for the Motor Neurone Disease Association.

The community champion at Ilminster’s Tesco store stayed silent from 10am to 6pm on Friday (August 19, 2016) – a marathon eight hours which proved a huge ask for someone who freely admitted beforehand that she likes nothing better than to chat!

But eight hours were successfully completed and Helena said: “That was so difficult! That is the hardest thing I’ve ever done.”

There was a collecting bucket in the store for people wanting to make donations to the MND Association and Helena is hoping to have raised several hundred pounds for the charity.

Motor Neurone Disease is a progressive disease that attacks the nerves in the brain and spinal cord. This means messages gradually stop reaching muscles which leads to weakness and wasting.

The MND Association is the only national charity in England, Wales and Northern Ireland focused on MND care, research and campaigning.

Helena said: “The charity does an amazing amount of work and so every donation will be most welcome.”

She took part in the charity’s Silence Speaks for Motor Neurone Disease with the belief that the “more who join our silence, the louder our voice.”
