SOUTH SOMERSET NEWS: Have you been inspired by the Olympics? Join the I Am Team GB event!

LOCAL sports clubs will be joining forces later this month to offer free activities at Yeovil Recreation Centre to celebrate Team GB’s amazing performance at the Rio Olympics.
The event on Saturday, August 27, 2016, forms part of I Am Team GB - a nationwide campaign that has inspired thousands of UK sports clubs to open their doors to new participants.
Everyone is welcome to go along to Yeovil Recreation Centre – off Mudford Road - from 11am to 3pm to try their hand at sports including Athletics, Netball, Hockey, Table Tennis, Badminton and Volleyball.
I Am Team GB is organised by ITV and The National Lottery, working with the British Olympic Association, UK Sport and supported by Join In, to inspire the Great British public to take part in sport.
Jake Hannis, senior sport and healthy lifestyles officer at South Somerset District Council, said: “We’re delighted to be joining leisure centres and sports clubs up and down the country in putting on a range of free activities to celebrate Team GB’s successes.
“So many of our sporting heroes in Rio started their journey within local sports clubs, and this event is a great opportunity for our local clubs to showcase their work as well as attracting new members and people returning to the sport.”
The council’s leisure and culture spokesman, Cllr Sylvia Seal, said: “The Rio Olympics have gripped the nation and Team GB are doing an amazing job, making us all proud. We hope that the local sports clubs will see an increased interest in their clubs following Olympics.
“In Yeovil Recreation Centre, South Somerset has a sporting facility to be proud of. We are home to Yeovil Olympiads Athletic Club and Yeovil & Sherborne Hockey Club – both of whom offer excellent opportunities to get involved in exciting sports.”
