ILMINSTER NEWS: Mayor says it is a “sad day” in Ilminster after Recreation Ground fire

THE Mayor of Ilminster has spoken of her disappointment at the fire which has damaged the toilet block at the town’s Recreation Ground in the early hours of this morning (Sunday, July 10, 2016) – but heartened by the community spirit shining through.

A fire at the toilet block at the play area of the Recreation Ground off Canal Way was reported to the Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service at around 1.15am and found a motorbike on fire which had spread to the building.

The Fire Service had to return to the toilet block at around 6am when another fire was reported to have broken out.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation but the toilet block has now been sealed off to the public due to the damage, as well as the adjoining tuck shop which is well-used by Recreation Ground users when open.

The Mayor, seemingly coming to the conclusion that it might not have been an accident, visited the site earlier today to see for herself the damage. “It is a sad day in Ilminster – fire has damaged the toilet block and the tuck shop," she said.

“The cause as yet is unknown, but I was very heartened by the community response with people who came and helped secure the building.

“Thanks go to the police and fire services, also Mr Sibley who helped secure the site.”

Cllr Keitch added: “I was very impressed by the community response with lots of people coming to help.”
