ILMINSTER NEWS: Giant water slide makes a splash for new Archie Gooch Pavilion

HUNDREDS of people enjoyed a giant water slide attraction in Ilminster yesterday (Saturday, July 9, 2016) to help celebrate the opening of the new Archie Gooch Pavilion.

Although the pavilion – the new headquarters for Ilminster Town FC in Britten’s Field – is not totally up and running, it failed to stop the party.

The big attraction at yesterday’s family fun day was a giant water slide and hundreds of people – of all ages – took the plunge.

Ilminster Press was at the event yesterday and took more than 1,000 photos from the family fun day and these have been added throughout today to our “photo galleries” section. All 35 photo galleries are now on-line.

It was a proud moment for many members of Ilminster Town FC – many of whom have worked tirelessly behind the scenes to get the new clubhouse built.

Club secretary Andy “Eric” Fish said it was back in 1999 when the idea was first suggested and he was always confident that it would happen – eventually.

"Just goes to show that with a lot of hard work and perseverance things can be achieved," he said.

Club chairman Darren Manley said he was delighted to see the project come to fruition, while Darren Paul, who has played a leading role in the Archie Gooch Pavilion, was overcome with emotion when asked for his thoughts.

Among the big attractions at the clubhouse was the new “sponsors wall” where individuals, groups and companies have sponsored an engraved brick.

The wall maestro, sponsorship co-ordinator Paul Webber, said the family fun day had been a huge success and thanked everyone for attending.

Photos from the family fun day are being sold by Ilminster Press – with proceeds being donated to Ilminster Town FC.
