ILMINSTER NEWS: Find out more about being a town councillor

THE Mayor of Ilminster is inviting anyone interested in becoming a member of the town council to go along to find out more at an information evening.

There are currently three vacancies for councillors on Ilminster Town Council and it is expected that there will be an election in August to fill these spaces.

On Thursday, July 7, 2016, at 7.30pm in the Minster Rooms, Ilminster, the town’s Mayor, Cllr Val Keitch, will be hosting an evening for local people to attend and find out about what is involved in being a councillor and how to take the first steps towards making it happen.

Cllr Keitch said: “If you are interested in becoming a councillor, or know someone who could be persuaded to stand for election just come along to the evening to find out more about what is involved; there is no need book.

“We will be talking about the highs and lows of being a councillor, the sort of work the town council gets involved in and giving an overview of the election process.”

To stand as an Ilminster Town Councillor you need to be British or a citizen of the Commonwealth or European Union, at least 18 years old and registered to vote in Ilminster or have lived, worked or owned property here for at least 12 months before the election.

Town councillors are local people who take an interest in what happens in the community; they have varied backgrounds they bring a wealth of knowledge and experience as well as community understanding to the town council team.

The vacancies on Ilminster Town Council have arisen following the recent resignations of Carol Goodall, Rose Neave and Sophie Storey.
