ILMINSTER NEWS: More roadworks for the town

EMERGENCY roadworks are to be carried out on a main road through Ilminster – just as one major project in the town is about to be completed ahead of schedule.
The major drainage improvement works on Station Road between the A303 Southfield Roundabout and the roundabout near to the Stonemason’s pub are due to be finished – a week early - tomorrow (Friday, March 18, 2016).
But Somerset County Council has confirmed today (Thursday, March 17, 2016) that an unrelated problem has arisen further up Station Road near to the Shrubbery Hotel.
“A property near the hotel is being flooded by a broken highway drain,” said a council spokesman.
“Work at this location was not planned, however, as a result of the early finish at Station Road, we have taken this opportunity to mobilise the same gang, who have worked so capably over the last four weeks, to do this emergency work to assist the concerned resident.”
The spokesman added: “This work will not require a road closure and Station Road will remain open with temporary traffic signals in place. These will be removed for the Easter period, enabling unrestricted access to Ilminster.”
Although there have been sympathies for the householder – the works could not have come at a worse time with traders having already seen business hit hard in recent weeks due to the Station Road closure.
One well-known trader, in an email to Ilminster’s county council representative Cllr Linda Vijeh, said: “Trade has been absolutely devastated from the current road closure. These latest roadworks will mean seven weeks of chaos in total.”
