CLUBS AND SOCIETIES: Nyanza Lodge hands out cash to local groups

ILMINSTER Youth Football Club and the 1st Ilminster Brownies have received £1,000 each – thanks to members of the Ilminster-based Nyanza Lodge of the Masonic Lodge.

The Nyanza Lodge put in £1,000 towards the funds and gained match-funding from the Somerset Province of Masons.

Charlie Barker, the assistant provincial charity steward of Somerset Province, said: “The Somerset Province as a whole looks to support local Lodges in what they do, and has several funds that do so.

“Nyanza have accessed the Legacy Match Fund to get matched funding for their local causes.

“This is a fund that has been operating for the last six years and has so far given out £35,000 directly to 45 lodges to match the Lodge’s own fundraising.

“Across the Province, looking at all the Lodges and all the funds, over the past seven years, over £800,000 has been donated to charities and organisations across Somerset.

“So when local organisations like the Brownies or football teams need support, it’s something that Lodges really try their best to support. Investing in the local community pays dividends for us all.”

Pete Childs, of Ilminster Youth Football Club, and Becky Bristow, of the 1st Ilminster Brownies, were on hand to receive the cheques from Mr Barker and the Nyanza Lodge's Worshipful Master, Keith Green, during a presentation ceremony held on Tuesday, February 9, 2016, at the Shrubbery Hotel in Ilminster.
