CARNIVAL: Gemini make entrance – a week later than planned – in style

THE Ilminster-based Gemini Carnival Club had promised to put on a great show last night (Saturday, October 1, 2016) at its home parade and it did not disappoint the crowds.

After months of hard work and preparation the award-winning club was forced to pull out of last weekend’s Carnival at Wellington on the morning of the procession on Saturday, September 24, 2016, due to mechanical problems.

But the club members worked round-the-clock in the past week to ensure that it was all systems go for their home Carnival when they took to the road with their 2016 entry for the first time with a tableau inspired by the Phantom of the Opera.

Club chairman Gary Lawrence, speaking on social media, said: “I would like to say a very special thank you to the guys that have worked so hard this week getting our tug engine stripped, rebuilt and working again. It has been an amazing effort.

“I would also like to thank the rest of the club for sticking together to get the show on the road for our home Carnival.”

Gary added: “A big thanks also to everyone else that has offered us help and support over the last week – at times this has been unbelievable.”

Gemini had wanted to put on a great show for the crowds last night in memory of long-standing club member Les Brister who died earlier this year.

And there is no doubt that Les would have been looking down as proud as punch as the Phantom tableau weaved its way through the streets of Ilminster.

Gemini last night won Best Tableau Pose, Best Costume on a Float, Best Music on Local Float, Best Build-Up, Spirit of Carnival, and the Mayor’s Choice.
