CARNIVAL: Organisers urge motorists to park sensibly

MOTORISTS are being asked to use their common sense in Ilminster tonight (Saturday, October 1, 2016) ahead of the Carnival and not park on roads where there have been yellow traffic cones placed.

Organisers of Ilminster Carnival – which takes place tonight – have said that in recent years there has been a lot of congestion created at the end of the procession because some people have parked irresponsibly.

There will be no waiting cones on one side of the road on Ditton Street and Listers Hill, right out to Moolham Lane, to mean that motorists can only park on the other side of the road.

But a Carnival spokesman said: “In past years when we have had a lot of congestion after the Carnival this has been caused by people parking where the yellow cones are.

“They are put there for a reason – we don’t put them out for fun. If there are yellow no waiting cones please do not park there.”

The route out of Ilminster following the Carnival up Listers Hill has been gridlocked in recent years because bad parking has caused huge problems for motorists.

The B3168 from Boxstone Cross to the junction of Townsend closed at 2.30pm this afternoon in order for the Carnival entries to begin lining-up.

East Street, Silver Street, West Street and Station Road will close at 6.15pm and there will be no parking along these roads at all. From Hort Bridge to Riec Sur Belon Way will be closed at 6.45pm.

The Carnival parade through the town is scheduled to start tonight at 7.15pm.
