CARNIVAL: Results and photos from Ilminster Children’s Carnival

YOUNG people brought plenty of colour to the town centre on Saturday (September 24, 2016) for the annual Ilminster Children’s Carnival.

There were cowboys and Indians, pirates and dragons and even a teddy bears picnic as the procession made its way through the town.

But it was an entry based on Brazil – entitled Socca Samba – which hit the right beat with the judges.

Lucy May Brion, Owen Muckersie, Oliver Upshall and Brooke and Harper Oliver scooped the prize for Best in Carnival along with the Barbara Lee Cup for Best Overall Individual Costume. They also won the group of three to six children on foot category.CARNIVAL: Results and photos from Ilminster Children’s Carnival

The Children of Neroche Playgroup, which is based at Broadway Village Hall, won a couple of awards with the Tony Goverd Cup for Spirit of Carnival and the group of four or more with non-motorised vehicle class. The playgroup, which is looking for more children to join on 07717-831-092, was delighted with its Carnival success.

Kai Newbury won the single entry up to seven-years-old on foot category with a cute version Avatar, while Jack Lewis won the same category for eight to 16-year-olds with his fun take on Bear Grylss.

Oliver and Monica Newbery scooped the pairs up to 16-years-old on foot category with Apprentice Pirates, while the Sunny Ile Pre-School won the group of seven or more on foot category with Cowboys and Indians.

Lana and Mason Suckling wowed the judges with their Whose Afraid of the Big Bad Wolf entry based on the story of Little Red Riding Hood, although the whole Carnival experience seemed to be too much for Mason as he slept through virtually the entire parade!

There was the battle of the dragons for honours in the Federation Class Single or Pairs category with Osscar Collins and Lilly Cumming being named joint winners with their entries Dragon Master and Age of the Dragon respectively.

Osscar Collins also won the Plato Cup for Most Colourful Entry – a new cup this year for the Children’s Carnival.

Rose Gillingham, Georgie and Aless Hounsell won the Originality Cup with their entry The 4 Elements.

The parade was led by the town crier Andrew Fox and his wife Julie, along with the Ilminster Majorettes.

Members of the Ilminster Fire Service also took part in the parade, while at the rear of the procession were members of the Ilton-based Trojan Twirlers Majorettes.

Pupils from Greenfylde First School also took part in the Children’s Carnival with their colourful umbrellas.

Organisers were thankful that rain stayed away – once again – for the Children’s Carnival and that the only umbrellas on view were those from Greenfylde.
